Situation: Andy and Lisa Wingfield have a two-story house with the furnace located in the basement. The thermostat was located on the first level. The master and kids’ bedrooms are all on the second floor. The second floor was hot in the summer and made it difficult to sleep at night. They adjusted manual dampers in the basement to try to move more air upstairs, but this did not make the second floor comfortable.
Action: We performed a heat load calculation on the house to determine if the system was properly sized. The ductwork was inspected to evaluate proper airflow distribution. It was determined that a single system could handle the heating and cooling needs of the house.
The Wingfield’s chose to upgrade their existing system and add a zoning system. The zoning system allowed them to have a thermostat on the second floor as well as the first floor. A new separate heating and cooling system was not needed to make the second floor comfortable, saving thousands of dollars.
Results: Andy and Lisa Wingfield were able to maintain a constant temperature on the second floor. It made sleeping in the bedrooms comfortable. They were able to set back the thermostat at night to sleep in a cooler environment. At night, the downstairs was set back so they could save energy by not having to cool it. During the day, the young children were able to take naps in their bedrooms.
In the customer’s own words: “Anthony explained very clearly what they were going to do and did it. It didn’t require having personnel back four times to correct things; they just did it right. You are thinking, ‘No way!’…‘Yes way!’. It has made sleeping more comfortable and the girls are more rested.”
