Every year when the temperature drops dramatically for the first time, our technicians at
Anthony Plumbing, Heating and Cooling are busy helping customers keep their homes cozy.  A reliable heating system can be a godsend, though you may not appreciate the monthly heating bills to run it effectively in the winter.  This doesn’t need to be the case.  With a little preparation and help from a qualified professional, here’s how to get the most from your heating system this winter.

The most important thing is to make sure your system is running at peak efficiency.  This means annual routine maintenance once a year. A professional furnace tune-up involves both the efficiency AND safety of the system.  A trained technician can clean the internal components, tighten anything that may have become loose, and check for any larger issues waiting to strike. A small thing like a loose bolt can create a lot of wear and tear on the furnace as a whole. Not only does maintenance help reduce the risk of a breakdown later, but it keeps the furnace running efficiently, which helps lower your monthly bills.
You can help the process with a few tricks of your own. Change your air filters regularly to keep dust and dirt out of the system. A dirty, clogged filter makes the motor work harder to push air through your system.  A laboring motor uses more energy and cost more money to operate.  See if you can add insulation to your home, which will help it retain heat better, and seal any fissures around doors and windows.  Set your thermostat a few degrees lower than you might otherwise and dress warmly with sweaters or sweatshirts when you get home.  If you have the resources, you might also consider an upgrade to your heating system, such as zone controls that let you heat just the portion of the house you’re occupying.
